An Emmy-Nominated Story Worth Telling
When CBS Austin evening anchor Walt Maciborski first approached me about producing a news story on Rescue One More, I was skeptical. Would his producers think it was a story worth telling?
Much of our organization’s story is rooted in a faith journey, and I wasn’t sure how that would resonate with CBS’s audience—or if viewers would even want to hear about child sexual violence happening on the other side of the world.
Walt assured me they would.
A few weeks later, Walt and photojournalist Ryan Sullivan arrived at our home and set up a makeshift studio in our living room to interview me, Vanessa, and Sarah.
Vanessa entered her session with prayer.
As she began narrating her story, both Walt and Ryan leaned in.
Months passed with no word, and I assumed the project had been shelved.
Then one day, a text came from Walt with a YouTube link. What he had promised as a 3-minute news segment turned out to be a 12-minute story, beautifully edited with powerful footage from Uganda.
Later, Walt hinted that CBS was considering expanding it into a full 30-minute special.
When Your Little Story Becomes Big News
On Thanksgiving Day last year, that special aired during CBS Austin’s evening news slot. We watched with friends and family, and were blown away by the care and excellence poured into telling this story.
Two weeks ago, Walt sent us another message: the Rescue One More special has been nominated for an Emmy.

This just goes to show that when someone uses their platform to shine a light on injustice, lives change.
Stories get told.
People take action.
Children find freedom.
We’re deeply proud of Vanessa. We’re also incredibly grateful for Walt Maciborski and the entire CBS Austin team for their courage in telling this story with such depth and dignity.
Another thing we’re grateful for is you. Without your support, Rescue One More’s story wouldn’t be what it is.
