Healing and Trauma Recovery for Child Survivors

Healing Services for Survivors and Caregivers

Helping Children Heal After Abuse

The effects of child sexual violence can last long after the abuse ends. Survivors often experience fear, anxiety, depression, shame, nightmares, behavioral challenges, difficulty trusting others, and struggles in school and relationships.

At Rescue One More, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to heal. Through professional trauma counseling, family support, mentoring, and community-based care, we help survivors move from crisis toward restoration, resilience, and hope.

Our healing services are provided both at our Rescue One More Centers and within communities throughout Uganda, ensuring children and families can access the support they need wherever they are.

Child-Friendly Counseling Centers

Every Rescue One More Center includes dedicated child-friendly counseling rooms designed to help children feel safe, comfortable, and understood.

These spaces provide a welcoming environment where children can process difficult experiences at their own pace with trained trauma counselors who understand the unique needs of survivors.

Counseling sessions are tailored to each child’s age, experiences, and emotional needs, helping them:

  • Process traumatic experiences safely
  • Reduce anxiety, fear, and emotional distress
  • Build healthy coping skills
  • Develop confidence and resilience
  • Strengthen relationships with caregivers and trusted adults
  • Rebuild hope for the future

Healing takes time, but children who receive appropriate support can recover from trauma and thrive.

Healing

All Rescue One More counselors receive specialized training in evidence-based trauma interventions used to support survivors of abuse and violence. Our therapeutic approaches include:

  • Trauma-Focused Counseling
  • Art Therapy
  • Play Therapy
  • Sandtray Therapy
  • Timeline Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Grief and Loss Counseling
  • Family Counseling

Using a variety of approaches allows counselors to meet children where they are and adapt treatment to their developmental stage, personality, and individual healing journey.

Community-Based Counseling and Family Support

Healing does not happen only in a counseling room.

Many survivors continue to live with their families and receive support through our Community-Based Care program. Our counselors travel into communities to provide ongoing counseling and psychosocial support to children and caregivers.

Family members often experience their own emotional challenges after learning a child has been abused. Parents and caregivers may struggle with guilt, anger, confusion, fear, or feelings of helplessness.

Our counselors work alongside families to:

  • Understand the impact of trauma
  • Learn how to support a survivor’s recovery
  • Improve communication within the family
  • Address safety concerns
  • Strengthen protective relationships
  • Promote long-term healing and stability

By supporting both children and caregivers, we help create healthier environments where recovery can continue long after counseling sessions end.

Community Clinics: Healing Together

One of the most powerful parts of our healing program is our Community Clinics.

These gatherings bring together parents, caregivers, and family members of survivors for facilitated discussions, education, and group counseling.

For many participants, it is the first time they have met others who understand what they are experiencing.

Community Clinics help families:

  • Realize they are not alone
  • Learn from others facing similar challenges
  • Receive emotional support
  • Build healthy coping strategies
  • Gain practical tools for supporting survivors
  • Strengthen community protection for children

The shared encouragement and understanding that emerge from these gatherings often become an important part of the healing journey for entire families.

Mentoring, Discipleship, and Emotional Support

Healing involves more than addressing trauma. It also means helping children discover their value, purpose, and potential.

Our mentors build meaningful relationships with survivors, providing encouragement, guidance, and positive role models. Through mentoring, children develop confidence, leadership skills, healthy relationships, and hope for the future.

Many children also participate in Bible studies, discipleship activities, and faith-based discussions that help them process difficult experiences and discover spiritual healing alongside emotional recovery.

A Journey Toward Restoration

Healing from sexual violence is rarely immediate, but recovery is possible.

Every day, we see children overcome trauma, regain confidence, strengthen relationships, and begin to dream about their futures again.

Through professional counseling, family support, community care, mentoring, and spiritual encouragement, Rescue One More helps survivors move beyond trauma toward lasting healing and restoration.
