Justice for Child Survivors: Helping Kids Get Their Day in Court

Scott & Vanessa

Justice is a critical part of the healing process for child survivors of sexual violence.

It’s also the one piece my daughter, Vanessa, never received. After she disclosed what had happened to her, she watched her uncle get bribed out of jail. That failure of justice shaped our family forever.

At Rescue One More, we are creating a pathway to justice for children in Uganda who have experienced sexual violence.

Why Justice for Child Survivors Matters

The journey toward justice is often long and difficult.

In Uganda, many child survivors and their families face overwhelming barriers, including corruption, intimidation, poverty, and pressure to settle cases privately outside the courts.

These private settlements may happen quietly, but their consequences are devastating. They deny child survivors the justice they deserve and leave offenders free to harm more children.

That’s why Rescue One More ensures that cases of child sexual violence are reported, investigated, and prosecuted through the legal system.

Creating a Pathway to Justice

In the communities where we work, corruption and private settlements are no longer easy options.

Our Community Action Teams, also known as CATs, commit to helping children access justice by supporting arrests, evidence collection, investigations, and legal follow-up.

Their work makes a measurable difference.

So far (at the time of writing this), Rescue One More has helped:

  • Facilitate 237 arrests
  • Get nearly 100 cases committed to the High Court
  • Provide legal support for children and non-offending family members
  • Keep cases moving forward with transparency and accountability

Because of the baked-in transparency of our multidisciplinary team model, offenders are being held accountable, and more children are closer to getting their day in court.

Supporting Children Through the Legal Process

Legal proceedings can be frightening and confusing for children. That’s why justice for child survivors must include more than arrests and court dates.

Rescue One More walks alongside children and their families through the entire process.

With your support, we’re able to:

  • Facilitate crime scene investigations and arrests
  • Collect evidence in a way that minimizes further trauma
  • Provide legal guidance for children and non-offending family members
  • Offer emotional support, counseling, and care throughout the justice process

Each step matters.

Every statement taken with care matters.

All cases that reach court matter.

And every child who is believed, protected, and supported matters.

Speaking Up for Children

Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights
